So ... reality check today. My wife decided that she wanted to start walking at the local track in order to fight off the possibility of gestational diabetes. She is at a higher risk due to family past and other factors. I am a little over weight for my age and size and decided it would be a good time for me to exercise as well.

Let me tell you. I have done little to no physical activity in over 6 years. This was painful.

I was able to run 1 mile in two half mile increments with a walking quarter mile between each. That took 32 minutes to do. Shameful.

Hopefully over the next four months I can get that down and add more distance.

Update:

I will be letting you all follow my training as I go. This will help me since I will be "answering" to someone and hopefully can get a little encouragement and "discipline" from you guys on here.

Day 2: Started late in the evening since the Softball game was canceled tonight due to rain (which stopped just as everyone left the school) Ran 2 min walked 4 and repeated this 5 times. This was not that bad. I was just about to the tired point as the 2 minutes ran up. Hopefully next week when its Run 3 Walk 3 I don't get tired at 2min. All in all good day. I can start to feel those "unused muscles" starting to hurt.

I did some research today on how to run and good posture while running. Hopefully this will ease some of the minor aches that I have today due to improper running techniques.

I found a nice online workout schedule where I can record process and track what I am doing.

Its a 10 week schedule of interval training leading up to a goal of 30 minutes of constant even paced running. This should be equal to close to 3-4miles depending on the speed I can keep.

Wish me luck.

Good for you on getting in shape. It's amazing how out of shape you get without regular exercise.
One word of advice - buy yourself a pair of GOOD running shoes. This is critical. Without them you are setting yourself up for injury, to your ankles, knees, or back.
I used to run till my knees started bothering me. I took up cycling and never looked back. I can ride for hours with no pain - that is unless I'm racing!
I really enjoy cycling a lot more than I ever enjoyed running. You cover more distance, it is easier on your joints, and I can ride with my wife, daughter and friends.
Anyway, do what you like and works for you. The important thing is that you're committed to it.

Well. I stopped running.

There were a number of reasons and I wont use them as legit excuses because that's what they are... excuses.

1. Shins were hurting so bad I could hardly walk after
2. My wife stopped walking because its been 2 million degrees outside so she has switched to Yoga
3. I have been playing softball twice a week.

I like the idea of a bicycle. I may try to figure a way I can do that. Only problem is with the baby coming, I have a feeling I'm going to be pretty busy ,at leas for a while.
